The following is an alphabetical index to the death/burial records of St. Marcus United Church of Christ, St. Louis, Missouri for the years 1880 thru 1899. There are 1743 burials recorded during those years. Married women are also cross indexed by their maiden surname resulting in over 2200 entries in this index. All translating and typing were done by Mr. Buecher, who welcomes any corrections to this index.
This congregation was founded in 1843 as the southern part of the “Deutsche Evangelische Gemeinde in St. Louis, Mo.” [German Evangelical Church in St. Louis, Mo.] which had split from the “German Evangelical Protestant Holy Ghost Church”. It was sometimes referred to as the “South Church”. The “North Church” would later become St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. The first church building for the “South Church” was located in the Soulard area of St. Louis at the northwest corner of Jackson & Soulard Streets (now Third Street & Lafayette Ave.) and was dedicated in Dec. 1845. In 1856 this southern branch adopted the name “The German Evangelical St. Marcus Congregation”. Many members of St. Marcus Church previously belonged to Holy Ghost United Church of Christ and/or St. Peter's United Church of Christ.
The burial/death records from St. Marcus Church are written in German and start in July 1847. They often give valuable genealogical information not found elsewhere. Microfilm copies of these can be found at the St. Louis County Library in St. Louis, MO on microfilm # EVUC 24, item 7 & 8 and at the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah on microfilm # 1503035, items 7-8.
